Woud you use this? SMB Edition

Never Run Out of Inventory

Inspired by the Startup Ideas Podcast
Want to build the MVP for this? Let NTE Zero To One help you today
The One Liner
Inventory that reorders itself, like magic.
The 140 character tweet (or X) version
Manual inventory is dead. This system plugs into your POS and auto-reorders supplies from vendors when stock runs low, zero guesswork.
The Longer Story Version
The Problem
Small biz owners are not supply chain experts.
They’re juggling customers, staff, bills and somehow also expected to manage inventory with the precision of a Fortune 500 company?
So what do they do?
Spreadsheet. Whiteboard. Gut feel. Post-it note that says “Order more lids!!” stuck to a register.
That system works… until it doesn’t.
You over-order and sit on $4K of napkins. Or worse, you run out of the thing customers actually came for.
Meanwhile, Amazon restocks its warehouses with no human touch.
Why can’t a coffee shop do the same?
The Solution
What if your POS was smart enough to auto-reorder inventory the second you hit your threshold?
This system connects to your existing POS (Toast, Square, Clover, etc), tracks real-time sales, and auto-reorders from pre-approved vendors as soon as levels drop.
Imagine never having to say “we’re out” again.
You just set your min thresholds once, approve your vendors, and the system handles the rest, just-in-time reordering without overstock.
Bonus: it learns over time. Seasonality, promotions, anomalies? The more data, the smarter it gets.
It’s like hiring an ops manager for $29/month who never sleeps.
How We’d Build It
Stage 1: MVP (Solo Builder or Weekend Project)
Tools:
POS API: Toast or Square developer APIs
Airtable: lightweight inventory backend
Twilio SendGrid: email confirmations to vendors
What you build:
Track a few SKUs → set reorder rules → test auto-emails to vendors when stock hits minimum.
Stage 2: Indie SaaS (Real Biz)
Full POS integration library (Square, Toast, Clover, Shopify POS)
Add vendor management UI — approve vendors, set SKUs per vendor
Payment flow (Stripe) for SMBs to subscribe
Add dashboards for historical sales & forecasted inventory dips
Stage 3: Scale-Up (With Distribution + Defensibility)
Plug into supplier APIs directly (Sysco, Restaurant Depot, Faire)
Add predictive analytics: build a light model to forecast demand
Sell bundled with POS resellers / channel partners
Offer white-label version for POS companies to upsell
Why It Needs to Exist
Because small business owners are too busy running their business to babysit inventory.
This is the invisible tool that keeps them stocked without lifting a finger.
It’s not sexy, but it’s sticky. Once you turn this on, you never turn it off.
And that, my friend, is how you build a quiet cashflow machine in the background of every café, boutique, and barbershop in America.

Would You Use This? — SMB Edition

Here’s a fun game: pitch your idea to actual small business owners and see how fast they tell you the truth.
That’s what we did with this one (kind of):
“It’s a tool that plugs into your POS system and auto-reorders inventory from your chosen vendors the second you’re running low. No spreadsheets. No guesswork. Just restock magic.”
Then we took it to the frontlines — baristas, bakers, barbers, and bodega owners.
And guess what? They didn’t care about the tech.
They cared about three things:
Will this save me time?
Will this stop me from running out of stuff?
Can I trust it not to screw up an order during a Friday lunch rush?
One café owner goes:
“So you're telling me I never have to manually order oat milk again? Sold.”
Another bodega guy:
“Does it learn over time? Because I run out of ice cream every July.”
But not everyone was in. One owner of a boutique gift shop said:
“Honestly, I like ordering stuff. It's part of my control freak ritual.”
Which is great feedback too, because not every idea needs to be for everyone.
Here’s the point:
You don’t validate ideas in Notion. You validate them in conversation.
And sometimes, the best product research isn’t in a dashboard but it’s in watching someone mentally delete your app mid-sentence.
This “Would You Use This?” test is brutal… and exactly what most founders skip.
But if a busy coffee shop owner stops wiping a counter to say, “Damn, that would actually help me,” you might be onto something.
So go out there. Pitch the raw version.
No fancy branding. No logos. Just the one-liner and a question:
“Would you use this?”
If the answer is “hell yes,”
you’ve got something worth building.
And if not? Congrats, you just saved yourself 6 months.
